Scar Revision & Skin Cancer Reconstruction

Scar revisions and skin cancer reconstruction are some of my most rewarding procedures to perform. Every patient presents a unique challenge to restore both beauty and function. These operations are also some of the most beneficial procedures I can do for my patients, as they are often a very important part of the entire recovery process following a traumatic event or cancer treatment.

Scar Revision

Scars can occur after accidents, burns, infections, and surgery. Basically, anything that breaks through the skin barrier will cause some sort of scarring as the skin heals back together. Scarring is a natural healing process, and we would be unable to survive without this crucial body function. However, scars are sometimes unsightly, as the body attempts to heal vigorously. The appearance of scars depends on the type of injury or surgical incision, the area of the body, age, health, tissue thickness and tone, and post-traumatic or post-surgical treatment. Scars cannot be completely removed, but they can be revised to dramatically improve their appearance. In some cases, revising scars can restore function that is limited by the tight, constricted, scarred skin and underlying tissue.

Many minor scars respond well to skin treatments such as dermabrasion or injectable filler treatment. Repeated steroid injections are often used to soften and decrease the raised, thick appearance of hypertrophic scars.

Surgical revision techniques include excising the entire scar so that the resulting incision heals in a finer, more discrete line, placing the new scar in a more cosmetically hidden location, or to simply change and camouflage the appearance of the scar.

Scar contractures from burns, trauma or poorly healed tissue can be painful and restrict movement. There are several approaches to revising this type of scar. In some cases, the scar is removed and replaced with a skin graft or expanded surrounding tissue. Tissue advancement or rotation is often used for smaller scars and contractures.

Skin Cancer Reconstruction

Skin cancer is a very common disease, affecting men and women of all ages. Larger skin cancers that are removed may result in a defect that requires reconstructive surgery. There are many techniques to reconstruct different areas of the face and body. Skin grafts and local tissue flaps are commonly used. Multiple stages may be necessary to completely reconstruct the area. When necessary, I will rebuild a missing area of the face such as a nose, ear, or lip.

Skin cancer recovery means more than simply removing the cancer. Reconstruction is an important part of becoming whole physically and recovering emotionally.
