Rhinoplasty Questions

What is involved in rhinoplasty surgery?

Nose reshaping surgery may be performed under local or general anesthesia. A closed rhinoplasty utilizes incisions inside the nostrils. An open rhinoplasty is commonly used for more complex procedures, and the operation includes one external Incision made across the columella, which is the narrow bridge of skin between the nostrils. Bone and cartilage are reduced, sculpted, or repositioned. The skin is re-draped over your nose. A splint, cast or packs will be placed on your nose and inside your nostrils to maintain the new shape during recovery.

What can I expect during rhinoplasty recovery?

You can expect some bruising and swelling, and you may have black eyes. Immediately after surgery you may have a headache. You will experience some nasal stuffiness, but you should not try to blow your nose for at least two weeks after surgery. The splints and external sutures will remain in place for approximately one week. If you wear glasses, you will need to tape them to your forehead to keep the pressure off of your nose. You can go back to light activity one week after surgery, and strenuous activity should be avoided for at least two weeks. Sun exposure and any activity which could involve bumping your nose must be avoided for at least two months. You will notice results in 8-12 weeks, as the swelling starts to diminish. Your nose will continue to improve in appearance for more than one year as the internal structures, skin, and lymphatic drainage continue to remodel slowly over time.

Are the results of rhinoplasty permanent?

Yes, the results are permanent. However, the effects of aging, gravity and any sustained trauma or disease will always play a role in the constant changes of our faces and bodies over time.

Will rhinoplasty leave visible scars?

Incisions made inside of the nose will not leave visible scars. Incisions made on the outside of your nose will leave a small scar, but it is often placed where it is very difficult to detect.

What is the best age for rhinoplasty?

I recommend that whenever possible, patients wait until they are at least 18 years old to consider elective surgery. However, in some cases nose reshaping surgery is beneficial in younger patients who have congenital defects, sustained trauma, or have a disease process which can be alleviated or reconstructed with surgery.

Can rhinoplasty be performed in combination with other procedures?

Yes. Some patients choose to have nose reshaping in combination with other facial surgeries, such a chin reshaping or eyelid surgery. I will work with you individually, and we will come up with a safe plan to achieve your goals.
