Facelift (Rhytidectomy)
A facelift (rhytidectomy) and necklift can help reverse the effects of aging, gravity, stress, and sun and element exposure. Over time, your skin loses its elasticity and cannot recover as easily from the daily abuse of the sun and gravity. The connective tissue, fat and muscles in your face change with maturity. Sagging skin, deep creases, and fat malposition and atrophy work to hide your youthful beauty. A facelift and necklift address these problems in the lower two-thirds of your face and neck.
Facelift and Necklift Goals
A facelift and necklift remove excess skin and fat and tighten the tissues in the lower two-thirds of your face and neck, creating a smoother, firmer, more youthful appearance. They improve the look of your cheeks, neck, chin, and jaw line. A facelift can improve:
- A double chin
- The loss of a well-defined jaw line
- Midface (or cheek) sagging
- Deep wrinkles in the cheeks
- Deep creases and folds running from the nose to the mouth
- Loose skin
- Jowls
- Vertical cords in the neck (“turkey gobbler” neck)
- Excess fatty tissue in the neck
Facelift and Necklift Procedure
Discreet incisions near the ear, earlobe and back into the hairline are used to excise redundant skin, and the tissue of your lower face and neck are tightened to reveal a more natural, youthful facial contour. An incision underneath the chin may be necessary to remove fatty deposits in the neck and tighten the muscular cords. A minimal-incision facelift may be used in certain circumstances to achieve beautiful results with a smaller scar. Sometimes a necklift is performed as an isolated procedure for those patients that only need refinement in the neck area, such as for a “turkey gobbler” neck, vertical cords or excess fat under the chin.
A facelift and necklift will not correct the effects of aging around your brows and eyelids, nor will it remove fine lines from around your lips. While the procedure cannot stop the aging process, the results will last many years if you continue to care for your skin and general health properly, as well as minimize sun and tobacco exposure.
A facelift is often sought by patients in their 50’s, 60’s or later. It can also be a very beneficial procedure after you have achieved massive weight loss and have excess skin that has lost its elasticity. Performed alone, the focus of a facelift and necklift is to tighten and smooth out the folds and deep creases in your lower face and neck, rather than remove fine lines. It can also be performed in conjunction with a brow lift, eyelid surgery, and skin rejuvenating procedures such as dermabrasion or a chemical peel to rejuvenate your entire face. We will discuss what you would like to see improved in order to determine a realistic surgical plan to achieve your goals.
