Myths and Realities
There are many misconceptions about cosmetic and plastic surgery. Before undergoing any procedure, you should arm yourself with the facts.
Myth: All doctors who call themselves cosmetic surgeons are fully trained to perform cosmetic plastic surgery.
Reality: Any doctor can call himself or herself a cosmetic surgeon. No special training is required to use that title, and it is very confusing for patients as well as other medical professionals! Always inquire about your surgeon’s training and experience. In addition, your surgeon should operate in only accredited medical facilities and adhere to a strict code of ethics.
Myth: Cosmetic plastic surgery is only for the rich and famous.
Reality: At one time, that was true, but today cosmetic surgery has become much more affordable, safe, and socially acceptable for the average man and woman.
Myth: It is normal for your surgeon to be cold, distant, and resistant to questioning.
Reality: No doctor should behave this way toward patients. Your surgeon should establish a trusting relationship with you, listen to your concerns, and discuss any questions openly and willingly.
Myth: Cosmetic plastic surgery does not leave scars.
Reality: All incisions leave a scar. As plastic surgeons, we work hard to minimize the visibility of scars, and I will be honest with you about how much scarring you should expect.
Myth: Cosmetic procedures, such as liposuction, can help me lose weight.
Reality: No cosmetic procedure will take the place of a healthy diet and exercise, or work as a weight loss tool by itself. Liposuction can remove stubborn pockets of fat which do not respond to diet and exercise. Liposuction is not a useful, long-term or healthy way to get rid of a large amount of fatty tissue, and it cannot reduce intraabdominal fat or a “pot belly”. Body Contouring After Major Weight Loss procedures remove excess skin and tissue after massive weight loss following bariatric surgery or independent weight loss.
Myth: Common procedures, such as breast enlargement, have become so routine that any cosmetic plastic surgeon can do an adequate job.
Reality: Only a well-trained and skilled surgeon can evaluate your body and personal goals in order to tailor the procedure to produce beautiful, long-lasting, and safe results.
