Blepharoplasty
Your eyes are one of the first things that people notice when they meet you. They speak volumes about your mood and your health. Drooping or puffy eyelids can obscure the beauty of your eyes and make you appear unhappy, unhealthy, and tired. Eyelids that are very heavy and low can impair your vision. The effects of aging on both upper and lower eyelids can be corrected with eyelid surgery, known as blepharoplasty.
Eyelid Surgery Goals
Eyelid surgery opens up your eyes, creating a more youthful, bright appearance to your face. Eyelid surgery can correct problems such as:
- Sagging skin which obscures the contours of your upper lid
- Excess upper lid skin folds which make it hard to apply makeup
- Excess upper lid skin which hangs down, obscuring vision
- Excess or displaced fat, making the eyes look puffy
- Hollows making the eyes look sunken and creating dark circles
- Bags under the eyes
- Excess skin wrinkling in the lower lid
Upper Eyelid
An incision is made in the natural lid crease, and may be extended slightly into the smile line or “crow’s foot” at the corner of the eye. Excess skin is removed, and fat is excised or repositioned as necessary. Whenever upper eyelid surgery is considered, the brow position must be taken into account. It is common for a brow lift to be performed at the same time as a blepharoplasty to achieve optimal results. If the problem mainly lies with a heavy brow, eyelid surgery alone will not correct the problem.
Lower Eyelid
The incision is made just inside of the eyelid (a transconjunctival incision) or hidden at the lash line or in a deep crease. The incision may extend into a line or crease at the lateral part of the eye, or “crow’s foot” area, where it is hidden well. Fat is removed or repositioned, and excess skin and muscle can be removed if needed.
Eyelid surgery is often combined with a chemical peel to improve fine lines around the eyes and to give a more uniform skin quality throughout the face. Since eyelid surgery alone cannot correct a sagging brow, it is commonly combined with a brow lift for a more complete rejuvenating effect.
