What to Expect From Your Consultation and Surgery
Any kind of medical treatment, particularly cosmetic surgery, is more successful when the patient is well informed and knows what to expect. Patient education and the development of a trusting doctor-patient relationship are very important to me. I also believe that you should have the opportunity to learn whether you are a good candidate for your desired procedure and whether I am the right surgeon for you before you invest money into the experience.
Initial consultation
Your initial consultation is one of the most important aspects of your journey. It is an opportunity for us to meet each other and discuss your goals. I will explain which procedures can accomplish your goals and whether or not you are a good candidate for surgery. You will have the opportunity to view before and after images of my patients who have undergone similar procedures. This consultation lasts approximately 45 minutes. If you decide to proceed, we will have at least one more preoperative visit which is much more in-depth.
Photos
We will take pictures of you before and after your procedure. This allows me to thoroughly plan your surgery, and the photos also help me intraoperatively. In addition, you will be able to compare your own results with your preoperative photos, as well as help other patients learn what they can expect. You will never be identified in the pictures by name, and they will never be shared without your permission.
Inpatient vs. outpatient procedures
If your procedure requires only local anesthesia, sedation or a short general anesthesia, it is likely that it can be performed as an outpatient procedure and you will go home the same day. Depending on your health and the length of surgery, more extensive operations are performed as inpatient procedures only, and you may have to spend at least one night in the hospital.
Post-op recovery
Whether you have inpatient or outpatient surgery, you will need a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for at least 24 hours. You should plan on resting for the remainder of the day. I may ask you to begin walking right after surgery, but you will not be allowed to resume full activity for at least 2 weeks to minimize bleeding and swelling. Depending on the nature of your procedure, you may need help around the house and with your daily activities for a while. I will give you detailed post-operative instructions specific to your procedure.
Minimizing scarring
All surgery results in scarring, and every person heals differently. However, there are steps that you can take after your procedure to minimize the formation and visibility of scars and scar tissue. I will talk to you about what you can do to help minimize scarring before or after surgery.
Studies and evaluation by other doctors
In some cases, you may need to be evaluated by a specialist or your primary doctor before surgery. This is to ensure that you are in good health and that your body can tolerate the stress of surgery. It can also be necessary to rule out any underlying conditions, or to determine if special precautions need to be taken during your procedure. I will instruct you as to what laboratory tests or studies you will need prior to surgery in order to ensure your safety. I always reserve the right to cancel surgery and refund your money if I do not think it is safe to proceed.
Financing
I understand that many patients cannot afford to pay for their procedure up front in one lump sum. There are many financing options available for cosmetic surgery. We offer Chase Financing, please visit their website for more information regarding this financing option.
Arrangements and accommodations
For my patients who are from out of town or another country, or simply don’t have family and friends available for transportation or childcare, we can offer complete packages to create a positive and low stress experience. We offer limousine services to and from the surgery center or office, information about professional, certified child-care and attendants to help you recover smoothly, and a list of accommodations if you don’t live in the Sandpoint area.
