Dermabrasion & Microdermabrasion

Dermabrasion and microdermabrasion remove dead skin cells, stimulate new collagen production, and rejuvenate the skin’s texture and appearance. Dermabrasion is a more invasive procedure and can be utilized to revise skin irregularities and resurface skin. Microdermabrasion is a superficial resurfacing that has minimal down-time and pain as your skin is gently exfoliated and polished.

Goals of dermabrasion and microdermabrasion

Both procedures can improve your skin in the following ways:

  • Reduce fine lines and wrinkles
  • Improve the appearance of scars, including acne scars
  • Reduce hyperpigmentation
  • Reduce sun damage discoloration
    and age spots
  • Remove precancerous cells
  • Stimulate collagen production

Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion is a procedure designed to improve the appearance of small scars resulting from injuries or previous surgery, diminish fine facial wrinkles, and treat deep acne scars. It helps refinish the skin's top layers through a method of controlled surgical scraping. The treatments soften the sharp edges and contour deformities of surface irregularities, giving the skin a smoother appearance. The outermost layer of skin is carefully removed by using a burr or rotary wheel. Sometimes, more than one treatment may need to be performed to obtain the best result possible, particularly when the scar or surface irregularity is very deep. A form of anesthetic will be used to minimize pain during the procedure.

After treatment, you can expect temporary tingling, burning, swelling, or redness. Crusts may form over the treated area, which should not be removed. They will drop off as the new skin grows underneath. Some patients develop milia, or tiny whiteheads. New skin the in treated area is often lighter in color and very sensitive to the sun. Over the next 3-12 months, the new skin will return to normal.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a more superficial rejuvenating skin procedure. Only the very top layer of skin is mechanically removed and polished. Tiny crystals are blown across the surface of the skin to help reduce fine lines, pigmentation, superficial acne scars and bumpy skin.  The result is refreshed, healthier-looking skin. New skin elastin and collagen production is stimulated, so long term results include reduced fine lines and younger-looking, smoother skin. Down-time is minimal, and the treatment is not painful and can be used on all skin types and tone.  A series of 4-6 treatments are recommended to see any noticeable changes in appearance.  This treatment is not recommended for patients with active acne, rosacea, or very thin skin.

Microdermabrasion can be used as a monthly maintenance treatment after more aggressive skin care treatments such as a chemical peel.  It is often used on areas of the body such as the face and neck, décolleté, arms and hands.
