Breast Surgery Questions

Should I consider a breast lift?

If you are happy with the amount of breast tissue and volume you already have but feel that your breasts are sagging or simply have never had the appearance that you desire, a breast lift, or mastopexy, may be an appropriate surgery to achieve the appearance you want. During the surgery, the nipple-areola complex is moved to a more natural position on the breast. In some cases, a breast implant placed underneath the lift can increase volume and cleavage and improve overall shape better than a lift can alone.

What is involved in breast lift surgery?

Your nipples and breast tissue are moved to a higher, more natural level on your chest. If necessary, the skin below the areola is tightened and any excess skin is removed, creating a new, firmer shape and feel. You may have an incision just near the areola, completely around the areola, or extending down vertically to the inframammary fold. Some patients require a complete “anchor” incision, with a horizontal component in the crease.

What should I expect during breast lift recovery?

You will experience some discomfort following surgery, although most patients report that it is not as painful as they had anticipated. I will prescribe pain relievers as appropriate to help you stay as comfortable as possible. You will wear a postoperative bra to support your breasts for 2 weeks, and you will not be allowed to return to full activity such as running and weight-lifting for 6 weeks. Many patients return to work (depending on the job) within a week of surgery. Some bruising and swelling during the first two weeks is very normal. The breasts will continue to change and settle in to their new position for 6-12 months. You may experience a lack of sensation in your nipples which, in most cases, will subside over the first few weeks after surgery. You may not experience full, normal sensation for up to one year, and some patients report increased sensation. There is a small possibility that your sensation will never return or be completely normal. I will give you complete activity instructions as well as methods to help with scarring after surgery.

Can I have a breast lift in combination with other procedures?

Yes. Many women choose to have a breast lift in combination with breast enlargement. It is a popular Mommy Makeover option. A breast lift can also be combined with other body contouring procedures. We will discuss your personal situation and goals at the time of your consultation.

Are the results of breast lift surgery permanent?

The look you achieve with a breast lift will last for many years. It is natural for your breasts to begin to sag again a little bit as a natural part of the aging process. However, child birth, nursing and weight fluctuations can reverse the results of a breast lift. If you plan to have children or anticipate major weight loss in the near future, you should postpone your breast lift until after your major body-changing event.
