BOTOX® Cosmetic (Botulinum Type A toxin) is an FDA-approved purified protein that is injected to temporarily improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by relaxing the muscles beneath the skin. The facial expressions that we make everyday contribute to dynamic and static wrinkles. Genetics, sun exposure, and other factors can increase this effect, making the wrinkles appear more pronounced. Constant muscle tension and gravity in certain areas of the face can pull the tissue down or out of shape, creating a more aged appearance.

BOTOX® is a neurotoxin that works by blocking the chemicals that cause muscle contraction. When the muscles cannot contract forcefully, the wrinkles and lines are smoothed out and do not progressively worsen over time. Tiny, very specific injections target only the desired muscles, so you retain natural looking facial expressions. The most common areas of treatment are forehead lines, deep creases between the brows, crow’s feet around the eyes, and the mouth.

BOTOX® can be used to relax the muscles that pull the skin, temporarily mimicking the effects of lifting surgical procedures such as the brow lift or face lift when there is not significant excess skin.

When combined with injectable fillers, BOTOX® can smooth wrinkles while the hollows and deep folds are filled, for a dramatic overall youth-restoring effect.

Using BOTOX® injections can help to prevent the formation of wrinkles. You may choose to start using the injections at a fairly early age, targeting known problem areas, or after a rejuvenation procedure to help maintain the results.

BOTOX® is also used in combination with skin care treatments such as chemical peels and microdermabrasion for an additive rejuvenating result.

The results of BOTOX® are temporary. The benefit of temporary procedures is that the results can be adjusted and customized to fit the natural changes in your face over time. Results usually last between 3-4 months. Follow-up treatments may have a longer lasting effect than your initial session treatment. BOTOX® is very safe and effective, and there no down-time. In some patients, there may be mild redness or irritation at the injection sites which can last a few hours.
