Arm Lift Surgery

An arm lift, or brachioplasty, removes excess skin from your upper arms and creates a more natural contour. Massive weight loss can leave you with large amounts of hanging skin which can cause discomfort and make it difficult to find clothing that fits. While exercise can help restore the muscle tone in your arms, it cannot get rid of this excess skin which is no longer elastic.

Arm lift procedure

Brachioplasty, arm liftDepending on the amount of excess skin, different incisions need to be used for an arm lift procedure. The incisions may be hidden in your axilla (armpit), or they may extend down your inner arm to your elbow or even onto your chest or back.

Liposuction can be combined with an arm lift to removes any stubborn pockets of fat remaining in your arms.

After an arm lift

After your surgery, you will wear a compression dressing and be required to elevate your arms. The initial recovery lasts one to two weeks, but you will need to avoid heavy lifting and straining for six weeks.

Arm lift surgery does leave visible scars unless the incisions are only in the axillary area, where they are more easily hidden. The appearance of your arms will continue to improve for three to six months as the swelling recedes. As with any massive weight loss contouring surgery, the skin has often lost its inherent elastic properties and it may be necessary to have touch-up procedures in the future.
